]]>Celebrating achievements over the last 50 years!
Essex Reclamation Ltd celebrates its 50th year anniversary this week, a leading, independent waste management company based in Witham, Essex.
We are continuing to go from strength to strength!
Started in the 1950’s by Bob Short, with his sharp entrepreneurial character and supported by his wife Jean, the original man with a van, trading in rabbit skins, kraft paper and hessian sacks.
Chris, his son joined the business in the early 70’s and Kay his younger daughter in the early 90’s, Janice his elder daughter has always been involved in the business and Jean, having reached the marvellous age of 90 is still attending management meetings.
Over the years, through hard work and determination, the business has grown beyond all recognition, processing over 60 tonnes of recyclable materials each year, cardboard, paper, plastics, metals etc. We are proud to be independent and family run, focused on the needs of the business and always looking to achieve more.
We are so proud of our achievements over the past 50 years, earning a great reputation in the industry by providing excellent service to our clients.
We wish to thank all our staff past and present who have helped the business grow and thrive over the years, our longest serving member of staff has been with us since 1978!

]]>At Essex Reclamation, we have a famous annual event, The ‘Maldon Mud Race’ which takes place only 5 miles from us.
The race involves competitors racing across the mud of the River Blackwater at low tide.
It’s arduous, extremely muddy and like wading through treacle!! Listed as one of Britain’s weirdest traditions, it is in the same category as cheese rolling down the hill.
This year was its 50th anniversary and one of our drivers, Malcom Rowe who lives in Maldon decided to participate again but this year with his Son Kieron.
Not being one to do things the easy way, Malcom decided to dress up in a gorilla suit which proved not to be the greatest of ideas but he did complete the course and his son Kieron came 4th which is a massive achievement and both raised funds for extremely worthwhile charities in the process. Well done from all colleagues at Essex Reclamation Ltd.
On May 4th, Maldon’s unique Mud Race saw over 300 fund-raising competitors plough through the River Blackwater’s famous mud and chilly water from Promenade Park to the other side of the river at Heybridge and back.

He spends most of his time in the admin office with Mandy, but does take the odd stroll around the main office area to get some extra attention.

]]>Chris Short, who is retiring at Essex Reclamation, helps tell the story of those years and how the business has grown to be a strong presence in Essex and the South East.
After 50 years in the recycling industry Chris Short is to retire as Director at Essex Reclamation, one of the UK’s most successful independent recycling companies who currently employ 50 staff and have contracts all over the Essex and the South East.
Chris will still be in the background supporting his sister and long-term
colleague Kay Short who, as well as looking after the financial and business administration side of the business, will become Managing Director of the company this July.
The business was started in the 1960s by Chris’s late father Bob Short…

]]>- Conserving the world’s natural resources are finite as some are already in short supply. By recycling paper and wood you can saves trees and forests by planting new ones but you can’t replace virgin rainforest or ancient woodlands once they’re lost.
- Recycling plastic means creating less new plastic, which is definitely a good thing, especially as it’s usually made from fossil fuel hydrocarbons.
- Working with metals to recycle means there’s less need for risky, expensive and damaging mining and extraction of new metal ores.
- Recycling glass reduces the need to use new raw materials like sand – it sounds hard to believe, but supplies of some types of sand are starting to get low around the world!
Recycling reduces the need to grow, harvest or extract new raw materials from the Earth which lessens disruption and damage: fewer forests cut down, rivers diverted, wild animals harmed or displaced, and less pollution of water, soil and air. What’s more if plastic waste isn’t safely put in the recycling, it can be blown or washed into rivers and seas and end up hundreds or thousands of miles away, polluting coastlines and waterways.
The world’s increasing demand for new stuff has led to more of the poorest and most vulnerable people (for example, those living around forests or river systems) being displaced from their homes. Forest communities can find themselves evicted as a result of the search for cheap timber and rivers can be damned or polluted by manufacturing waste.
Making products from recycled materials requires less energy than making them from new raw materials: making paper from pulped recycled paper uses 40% less energy than making it from virgin wood fibres.

Positive growth and a diversification of services means the company as it stands today is very different to the one started by Bob and Jean Short in the 50s – don’t worry though, we still have their strong values entrenched at the core of the business.
